The Maytag Bravos XL is a large-capacity top-load washing machine with a lot going for it. Its 4.6-cubic-foot capacity enables it to wash 21 towels in a single load. A whopping 13 wash cycles means that your laundry will receive the custom care it deserves. There is a power wash for tough stains, a rapid wash when a few items need to be done quickly, and a delicate/handwash for those lacy unmentionables.

Jets distribute detergent over the entire load without diluting it first, which helps to power out tough stains. Best of all, this model boasts an internal water heater, which allows it to get hot enough to sterilize the basket and destroy bacteria, as well as allergens such as dust and pet dander. Most energy-efficient models aren't capable of getting hot enough for a true sanitize or allergen cycle, and so they rely on added chemicals for the former and an extra rinse for the latter. Both make them a little less, well, efficient.

An extended spin option lets you use the maximum spin speed to shorten the wash cycle and lessen drying time. Since most of the electricity it takes to do a load of laundry actually comes from drying, this option lowers overall energy use as well.

Speaking of energy savings: This washer has a cool wash cycle that boasts the cleaning power of a warm wash while using less heat, and thus less energy. It's Energy Star certified and qualifies for the top tier of the CEE Super Efficient Home Appliances Initiative.

This model offers the height of convenience, with auto water leveling and temperature control; child locks; and a see-through, slam-proof lid.
